Nevada’s journey toward legalizing online poker gained momentum after the Department of Justice clarified the Wire Act in 2011, which finally gave states the right to legislate online lottery sales and gambling as they wished. This opened the door for individual states to independently regulate online poker too.

The Nevada Gaming Commission quickly capitalized on this opportunity, drafting internet poker regulations by December 2011. As home to one of the world’s largest poker tournaments and some of the largest poker rooms for cash games, courtesy of the Las Vegas strip, Nevada knew that online poker had tremendous potential to expand the poker industry. Subsequently, the bill was passed through the legislatures and online poker officially became legal in February 2013.

Shortly thereafter, Ultimate Poker launched as the nation’s first state-regulated internet poker site in April 2013 in partnership with Station Casinos. It was a popular site, with enthusiasts flocking to it during the summer months when poker players arrived in Las Vegas for the WSOP. However, even though it was a huge success, due to unforeseen financial difficulties, it was forced to close down by late 2014. Nevada wasn’t left dry, as a year earlier, in conjunction with Caesars entertainment, WSOP launched its own online poker site: WSPO.com. To this day, it is Nevada’s only state-regulated site.
